Consultant story:

Sean Noonan, Resilient Leaders Consultant

We asked RLE Consultant and Maritime Safety expert Sean Noonan to tell us about his experience.

"This can be a life-changing experience if you give yourself into it.

The people I met on my accreditation were amazing and continue to be: we are a tribe, a village that helps each other with support and friendship.

Why did you choose Resilient Leaders Elements (RLE™)?

There are many leadership development systems and concepts available in the marketplace today, but I found that RLE™ had it all simplified with clear, useful tools. Yes, people will still need to be guided, but the tools work for themselves if we allow them to and put the effort in. When you take the RLE™ framework and apply it to systems, processes and people, it becomes an enormously powerful tool to optimise any organisational culture for leadership and safety.

Why did you need leadership training?

I am in the process of writing ‘Everyone's Guide to Safety’ and I was looking for a deeper understanding and application of the Human Element in particular with regards to Resilience and Leadership. My better half, Liz, did a course with Caroline Broad  (an RLE consultant) through the Ingenious Women programme at Edinburgh University and recommended I check it out. I did and here I am.

How has the Resilient Leaders Development Programme (RLDP™) helped you professionally?

The development challenges offered by the Challenge Engine help us all with our leadership habits, particularly awareness. The more empathy we generate with more people the better we will all be. I also find the Strength Engine gives us a clearer understanding of what we really want to achieve, by asking us meaningful questions so we can understand why these goals are important. One of my favourite challenges which aligns everything within and without ourselves is the Core Values exercise. My core values are Respect/Trust, Pleasure/Joy, and Creativity.

What stories do you have about the impact the RLE™ and RLDP™ have made?

Two stories come to mind immediately. The first was when, during the accreditation, I was suddenly overcome by a flood of emotion as I related my experiences of an unforgettable night at sea. I was a ship's captain on a very large crude oil tanker. The ship next to ours exploded and set us on fire. It was an excellent example of Resilient Decision Making, particularly the Creative and Versatile facets. I'd told this story for twenty years without being overwhelmed, but this time I broke down. I'd uncovered a Trauma that had been hidden inside me all this time. A silent assassin that held me back for so many years. I am now having professional help which is working well: thanks to my fellow Resilient Leaders Consultant, Alison Stratford.

The other is from one of my ‘friendly clients’ (the term given to those people we practice using the RLDP™ with during the Accreditation) who I could see was distracted during one of our earlier sessions. When I asked them if they were feeling OK, they replied that their partner had just asked for a divorce. We decided to change the goals and apply the challenges to their domestic situation rather than their professional one. I am happy to report that they are enjoying family life again and that the professional one also came into focus as a result.

What would you say to anybody considering the resilient leaders consultant accreditation course?

This can be a life-changing experience if you give yourself into it. The people I met on my accreditation were amazing and continue to be: we are a tribe, a village that helps each other with support and friendship. Vicki Maguire presented her Showcase on the same day that I did and we are currently working on several projects together.

The RLE Community headed by Rach and Rich, with the Ambassadors, Jacqui, Steven, Skye and Lisa, provides excellent support and advice for everyone. The RLDP™ has recently undergone a brilliant new upgrade which means it is now even more intuitive and motivating.  The co-coaching or ‘buddying’ programme we have in the RLE™ Community is again another useful and enlightening format which delivers when we take the time to engage with our buddies. There is no other community I have found like it. I recommend it to everyone.

The applications of these concepts matter in a deep seated way. I wish everyone had a chance to do this: the world would be a better place for us all, with more empathy, tolerance and understanding shaping our lives.
